Grass Before Clearing

Grass Before Clearing

This section of road has the bush of Tongariro National Park on one side and the cleared farm land on the other.

Near the top of this section the road turns right, enters Tongariro National Park and winds its way with bush on both sides. This bush corridor section continues to the old gate post which marks the edge of the old railway alignment.

The railway tracks were realigned in 1987 when the section of track between Ohakune and Horopito was straightened and electrified.

A new walking track has been built which leads from the old gate post to the disused railway tunnel, then climbs through the bush over the hill then down the other side to pass under the new Hapuawhenua Viaduct and across to the restored old Hapuawhenua Viaduct.

Return the same way.
