Submissions based on research findings, were presented to New Zealand Historic Places Trust and Tongariro National Park Board, asking them to recognise the uniqueness and historic value of the road.
Members of New Zealand Historic Places Trust were taken along the road to get first hand experience of what the submission was all about.
The submission to Historic Places Trust was to have the road classified as a Category 1 Historic Place. This was successful.
The submission to Tongariro National Park Board asked to have the Ohakune Coach Road listed as an actively managed site (preserved and protected) in the 2006 - 2016 Tongariro National Park Ten Year Management Plan.
The Ohakune to Horopito section of road is almost entirely in the park.
Members of Tongariro National Park Board were taken along the Ohakune end of the road.
The submission to Tongariro National Park was also successful.
