In 2005, a committee of local people and Department of Conservation staff was formed to manage road clearing.

Department of Conservation reports were completed and clearing began.

  • Part of the road on the Skyline section was falling away. To prevent further loss of   road surface due to water scouring, frost heave and slipping, the side drain was opened and long grass, toitoi and small trees growing on the road were removed. There has been no further slipping since the clearing and draining.
  • The lower section has been cleared from Marshall's Road up to the old gate post on ; the edge of the 1908 railway alignment.
  • Groups including Tongariro Natural History Society cleared the road around and under the Taonui Viaduct.
  • A track was also cleared through the narrow “Just in Time” railway cutting at the north end of the Taonui Viaduct.
  • 2009. The government is planning to build a North-South cycle-way, which includes parts of the Ohakune Coach Road. Government money will speed road clearing
